What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposal published at llmstxt.org for a single markdown file at the root of a website. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch, llms.txt tells language models what the site is and where the useful content lives — in a format small enough to fit in a model's context window.
The format is deliberately simple:
- An H1 with the site or project name (the only required part).
- A blockquote with a one-line summary.
- Optional paragraphs with key facts.
- H2 sections containing markdown link lists:
- [Title](url): notes. - An “Optional” section for links an AI can skip when it is short on context.
Does it help AI visibility?
Honestly: a little, and it is cheap. Adoption by the big AI engines is uneven, and no engine has committed to ranking or citing sites because of it. What it does is put your own description of your product, audience and key pages in one clean, machine-readable place — which helps any AI tool or agent that does read it describe you accurately.
The bigger wins usually come from content AI engines already cite: comparison pages, FAQ pages with schema, and mentions on sites like Reddit. To see which prompts your brand is missing from — and which of those fixes would close each gap — run the free AI visibility check. TrendlyAI's paid plans generate llms.txt, FAQ + schema and comparison-page drafts for your gaps (pricing, how we measure).
Tips for a useful llms.txt
- Write the one-line description the way you want ChatGPT to describe you: category, audience, differentiator.
- Link to pages with substance — pricing, features, docs, comparisons — not the login page.
- Add a short note after each link so a model knows what it will find there.
- Keep it current: update it when pricing or positioning changes.
Questions
What is an llms.txt file?
llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org) for a plain-markdown file at the root of a website that tells AI systems what the site is and links to its most useful pages, so a model can understand the site without crawling all of it.
Will llms.txt get my brand cited by ChatGPT?
Not on its own. It is a cheap, low-risk signal that makes your key facts and pages easy for AI tools to read, but AI engines decide what to cite mostly from the pages and third-party sources they retrieve. Treat it as one item on the list, alongside comparison pages, FAQ content with schema and mentions on sites the engines already trust.
Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of your domain, so it is served at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text — the same place as robots.txt.
Is my data sent anywhere?
The file is built in your browser. Only if you click Prefill do we fetch your public homepage once to read its title, description and links; nothing is sent to an AI model and nothing is stored.
